| Reviewing the StAnzas - 2009 |

Eleanor Livingstone (Artistic Director) and Brian Johnstone (Festival Director) get it. StAnza gets it. I predict that 2009 will be the year that StAnza sets new precedents for literary gatherings througout the UK, if not the world. Two of the most common words at this year's StAnza: SOLD OUT. Yes folks, poetry, old and new, traditional and improvised is making a huge new mark among audiences. Why did it work? I have some observations: tone, atmosphere, and diverse content. There are no 'green rooms' at StAnza. No 'Authors Yurt' behind the holy altar for writers to celebrate otherness. Last week, the Iain Rainkins' of the world stood on the same concrete with their readers before and after the show. Individuals were mostly differentiated by the books the were carrying, flipping through and, thank goodness -- reading. How did it work? Accessibility. The tickets don't cost the bonus of an RBS banker at StAnza, which must have been a direct correlation to the range of ages in the audiences. Much like The MOTH in New York City, StAnza invigorates young and old alike. From interactive appearances from Amsterdam to sold-out 'Slams' to the lyrical reading, StAnza fulfilled its mission: poetry, centre stage. The crowds are now gone, but the lines are always there for you: www.StAnzaPoetry.org -MLB
